News to Use Mrs. Reszka’s Room
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at Lewiston-Altura Elementary School. My name is Ginny Reszka and I am excited to be your child’s teacher. Throughout this busy and exciting school year, your child and I will have many adventures together. Please take some time to read (and save) the following classroom information.
All About Me – Each student will be highlighted for a day in February. More information will be sent home the end of January.
Action 100 – Your child’s reading level will be determined based on the IRLA (Independent Reading Level Assessment). This is a reading leveling assessment from the American Reading Company. It is a great way for students to pick “just-right” books to read.
Birthdays – Your child is welcome to bring in a Store-Bought treat to share with the class on their special day. We will also set aside 10-15 minutes during the day to celebrate. Summer birthdays will be celebrated on your child’s All About Me day in February. One more note, unless you are inviting every student in class to a birthday party, invitations must be sent through the United States Postal Service.
Book Orders – Book order(s) will be sent home at the beginning of each month and are usually due around the 15th of the month. You are able to order online using the classroom code P8VV7 or one check can be made out to Scholastic Book Club (even though more than one order may be sent home). There is also a link to our class’s Scholastic website on my school website page. Ordering books for your child also helps to provide free books to our classroom.
Communication – I am available before and after school, as well as, from 1:00-2:00 if you have any concerns to questions throughout the year. Please feel free to contact me via Seesaw, email at greszka@lewalt.k12.mn.us or by phone at 507-523-2194.
Field Trips – A note will be sent home prior to our field trips. We schedule the trips throughout the year.
Homework – Plan to spend 15-30 minutes per night reading with your child. This can include reading to them, with them, or listening to them read. Any and all Math, Spelling, and Reading practice at home are also important for your child’s success at school.
Home Folder – One of your child’s folders will be labeled as a Home Folder. This folder will be used to send information and student work to and from school. Please empty it daily and send it back to school. Each morning, students are responsible to empty their folders at school if needed. Backpacks will not be checked.
Labels – Please make sure to label ALL of your child’s belongings. This includes sweaters, jackets, mittens, hats, shoes, backpacks, and all school supplies. These items can easily be misplaced, and a label will help us find the appropriate home.
Library – Library will be on Thursdays.
Math – We will be using the enVisionMATH series which includes number sense, addition, subtraction, geometry, patterns, place value, money, measurement, time, data, graphs, fractions and much more!
Reading – Reading is a huge focus in 1st grade. Our reading series is “Journeys” by Houghton Mifflin. We will focus on the five main components of reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension.
Remember Gram – The 1st grade team will also be sending out a weekly newsletter to update you on our classroom activities. Look for this newsletter every Friday. It will also be posted on Seesaw
Seesaw – We use Seesaw to share and communicate with families!
Schedule – Here is our projected schedule. Please keep in mind modifications and adjustments will be made to best meet student needs.
Snacks – We will have a morning milk break each day. Milk is provided by the school. Children are welcomed to bring a healthy snack for break, but uneaten snacks will be sent home. Please refrain from sending candy.
Spelling – Spelling tests will be given on a weekly basis. Tests will be given on Fridays or the last day of the week. Spelling words will be included on the Remember Gram for practice throughout the week.
Tardiness – It is essential for your child to arrive to school on time. Your child needs this opportunity to build our morning routine and socialize with their classmates prior to the start of our day. The first few minutes of our day are vital in setting the tone for the day and getting your child ready to begin their day in a positive way.
Water Bottles – Your child may bring a water bottle to leave on their desk during the school day. Please anticipate that water bottles will be sent home daily.
Website – Our class website can be accessed via the district’s website: https://www.lewalt.k12.mn.us/# Click on Staff > Lewiston Altura Grades K-5 > Ginny Reszka, First Grade.
I am looking forward to a wonderful year and getting to know your child. Thank you for sharing your child with me.
