What Does the School Counselor Do?

Classroom Guidance
Teaches in the regular classroom setting to all students in grades K-6
Focuses on developing skills for personal, social and academic success in students
Several topics are covered, including:
- Bully prevention
- Calming down steps
- Conflict resolution
- Empathy
- Friendship skills
- Goal setting
- Identifying feelings
- Martin Luther King, Jr.
- Multicultural awareness
- Personal safety
- Problem solving steps
- Substance abuse
- Transition to 5th and 7th grade
- Other topics as needed

Group Counseling
Group counseling involves a small group of children in which similar needs are addressed outside of the regular classroom guidance lessons. Groups are formed based on need, and may include topics such as:
Anger resolution
Decision making skills
Divorce/blended families
Friendship skills
Grief/loss
Problem solving skills
Self confidence
Study skills

Individual Counseling
The school counselor works individually with students to help them better understand and work through their concerns and problems, to better understand themselves and others, and to work toward positive personal, social and academic development.

Working Together
The school counselor works together with others to help serve the needs of students. This can include referral services to coordinate more in-depth services.
